Ruth P. (Phillips) Thompson
Ruth P. (Phillips) Thompson, 83, of Jeffreys Neck Road, Ipswich, died Saturday November 8, 2008 in the Lahey Clinic Medical Center, Burlington following the complications of surgery. She was the wife of the late Arnold E. “Tiny” Thompson, Jr. who died in 1986.
Born in New Brunswick, Canada September 4, 1925, daughter of the late Gordon E. and Myrtle A. (Newman) Phillips, she was raised in Oak Grove, Malden and was a 1943 graduate of Melrose Public Schools. Married January 23, 1948, the Thompsons made their home in Andover for many years, moving to Ipswich in 1977. Throughout the years she was employed as a retail clerk and as a bank clerk, and most recently worked at the former Woolworth's Store in Ipswich. She enjoyed traveling to visit lighthouses. She was a member of the John T. Heard Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, the Friends of the Plum Island Light and the United Methodist Church of Ipswich where she enjoyed volunteering at the annual Strawberry Festival.
She is survived by three daughters, Bonnie Ouellette and her husband Richie of FL, Patti Tufano and her husband Ralph of N. Andover and Pamela Casey and her husband Bill of Ipswich; five grandchildren, Michelle Castillo of FL, Matthew Gendron of NH, Heather Gendron of N. Andover, Nicole Marchand of Ipswich and Derek Marchand of Ipswich; eight great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; a nephew, Donald Graham of Byfield and a niece Wendy Graham of NH. She was the sister of the late Jean Vedoe, formerly of ME.
Her funeral service will be held 10 am Thursday November 13 in the Whittier-Porter Funeral Home, 6 High Street, Ipswich, followed by interment in the Cowles Memorial Cemetery, Ipswich. Family and friends are respectfully welcomed. Visiting hours are Wednesday 4 to 8 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in her name may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen Street, Framingham, MA 01701.
