Robert M. Lewis

Robert M. Lewis, 82, husband of Eleanor L. (Green) Lewis of  Mulholland Drive, Ipswich, passed away peacefully on Friday June 16, 2017at the Ledgewood Skilled Nursing Center in Beverly, after a long battle with cancer.

Born in North Andover, September 7, 1934, he was the son of the late Raymond E. and Elizabeth I. (Donovan) Lewis.

Robert, known by most as Bob, was raised in North Andover and graduated with Johnson High school’s class of 1953. Bob was very active in sports at Johnson, particularly the football team of which he was captain. He was also elected class president all four years.  He later attended Lowell Technical Institute from which he earned his degree in Manufacturing Engineering.

On June 16, 1957, he married his high school sweetheart at St. Michael’s Church in North Andover. Eleanor and Bob were happily married for sixty years. In 1959 the couple purchased a home in Byfield where they lived until 1977 when they moved to their present home on Great Neck in Ipswich.

Bob worked as a mechanical engineer for several companies over his career, the longest being his employment with Compugraphic  in Wilmington. Even in later years, Bob maintained a strong work ethic and was employed part-time by L. W. Bills in Georgetown.

Bob was a long time member of the Georgetown Country Club where he and Eleanor enjoyed many years of golfing. Besides golfing, Bob was an avid fisherman. His favorite sport was catching striped bass.

Bob will be remembered as a devoted husband, a loving father and a very proud grandfather and great-grandfather.  

In addition to his wife Eleanor, he is survived by his daughter Katherine R. Cooper and her husband Jack of Lebanon, Maine, three grandchildren, Sara Edic of Merrimac, Matthew Cooper of Deerfield, NH, and Jarod Cooper of North Berwick, Maine, five great- grandchildren, Olivia, Ella and Gavin Edic all of Merrimac, and Benjamin and Emma Cooper of Deerfield, NH, two sisters, Jane Gilmore of Plainville and Elizabeth Black of SC as well as several nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Eleanor Gailey formerly of North Andover, Clare Mattheson formerly of Newburyport and Raymond Lewis formerly of CA.  

Visiting hours will be held Wednesday, June 21, from 4-7pm at the Whittier- Porter Funeral Home, 6 High Street, Ipswich. A funeral Mass and celebration of life will take place on Thursday, June 22 beginning at 10am at our Lady of Hope, 1 Linebrook Road, Ipswich followed by interment at the New Highland Cemetery. Family and friends are respectfully welcomed.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial donations be made to  Care Dimensions, 75 Sylvan Street, Danvers, MA 01923 and or the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen Street, Framingham, MA 01701.
