Pauline O. (Kelley) McKenzie

 

Pauline O. (Kelley) McKenzie, 97, of Upper River Road, Ipswich, wife of sixty-one years of the late Ipswich High School assistant principal Charles P. McKenzie, died Sunday, May 29, 2022 in the Ledgewood Rehabilitation Center in Beverly following a brief illness.

Born in Waltham on January 5, 1925, she was one of the two children of the late Francis and May (Paul) Kelley. Known as Polly to her family and friends, she was raised in Waltham and was a 1942 graduate of Waltham High School. She went on to study banking in a program by the American Banking Institute and was soon employed at the Waltham Federal Savings Bank in Waltham. Married in 1949 the McKenzies settled in Ipswich in 1958. In addition to raising her family during these years, she served as an eye and hearing technician in the Ipswich School System.  She later became employed as a secretary in superintendentís office, and later as a secretary in junior high school. An avid volunteer, she volunteered at the Ipswich Tourist Center, North Shore Music Theatre and served as an altar preparer at St. Joseph Church in Ipswich. She enjoyed her time cooking and sewing for her family and friends.

She is survived by a daughter, Dianne C. McKenzie of Ipswich; a son, Peter C. McKenzie and his wife Maureen of Kennebunk, ME; three grandchildren, Michael McKenzie and his partner Colleen OíConnor  of Charlestown, Kathleen E. Leahy and husband John of Natick, Meghan Q. Lalumiere and husband John of Swampscott; five great grandchildren, Patrick, Brendan and Nolan Leahy, Kara and Harper Lalumiere and a sister, June Callahan of Waltham.

Her funeral will be held 9:30 am Wednesday, June 1 from the Whittier-Porter Funeral Home, 6 High Street, Ipswich followed by the celebration of a Funeral Mass of Christian Burial at 11 am in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 52 Main Street, Essex. Interment will follow in the Cowles Memorial Cemetery, Ipswich. Family and friends are cordially welcomed. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in her name may be made to the Open Door, www.foodpantry.org
