Mildred Adele (Crossley) Oliver

Mildred Adele (Crossley) Oliver, 90, of Story Street, Essex, wife of Arthur H. Oliver Jr, died Wednesday May 8, 2013 at her Essex home following a long illness.

Born in Malden July 14, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Henry F. and Gertrude (Hood) Crossley Sr. Millie grew up in the Revere Beach Section of Revere and was a 1941 Graduate of Revere High School. During the years of World War II she was employed at General Electric in West Lynn where  she met her future husband.  Married on January 15, 1952 at St. Theresa’s Church in Revere, the Oliver’s made their home in Essex and raised a family. Millie loved Essex, and was always involved in local activities. She was President of the Women’s Club at St. John the Baptist Church of Essex, where she also taught Sunday school and over the years worked at countless church fairs and auctions. She was a member of the Essex Historical Society, a volunteer at the Essex Elementary School and T.O.H.P Burnham Public Libraries, and was a long time member of Friends of the Library. She worked at town elections for many years, taking and counting ballots. She always loved the opportunity to see everyone in town in one day!  Millie received the Essex Pride Award in 1989. At home she enjoyed furniture refinishing and chair caning, which she learned at adult education classes at Essex Elementary. She also loved singing, playing the piano and the ukulele. Following  Arthur’s retirement in 1984, they traveled extensively, including cruises to Alaska, Hawaii, Europe, and the Caribbean, including the Panama Canal. Their favorite cruises were their many steamboat trips on the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers.

In addition to her husband Arthur of sixty-one years, she is survived by three sons, Mark Edward Oliver of Chassell, MI, David H. Oliver and his husband Mark Edward Nelson of Essex, Thomas Arthur Oliver and his wife Sue Joy (Nelson) Oliver of Fort Collins, CO; two daughters, Susan June Oliver of Essex and Diane Marie (Oliver) Bevins and her husband Jonathan of Gloucester; ten grandchildren, Kristen (Oliver) Quevedo, Michael Oliver, Mathew Oliver, Gregory Oliver, Nadine Oliver, Jacob Oliver, Sarah Oliver-Munn, Daniel Oliver-Munn, Samuel Bevins and Katherine Bevins; two great grandchildren, Marcus and Diego Quevedo. She was predeceased by her four brothers and one sister, and a son-in-law, Murray Munn.

 At her request, there will be no services. Memorial contributions in her name may be made to Cape Ann Animal Aid, 4 Paws Lane, Gloucester MA 01930, Friends of the T.O.H.P. Burnham Library, 30 Martin St., Essex MA 01929, or Hospice of the North Shore, 75 Sylvan Street, Suite B-102, Danvers, MA 01923.  Arrangements are under the direction of the    Whittier-Porter Funeral Home of Ipswich.
