Mildred E. (Brown) Johnston

Mildred E. (Brown) Johnston, 87, wife of Joseph W. Johnston of Vestry Street, Beverly, died Tuesday November 28, 2017 in Genesis Rehabilitation, Wakefield following her brief illness.

Born in Ipswich July 30, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Ellsworth and Sylvia (Malmborg) Brown. Mildred was  raised in Essex, a 1940 graduate of Gloucester High School and North Shore Community College .

Married in 1977, the Johnstons made their home at her late Beverly address. For more than forty years, and until her retirement, she was employed as medical secretary at Massachusetts General Hospital . Mildred was a member of the Essex Grange #381, Order of the Eastern Star and  longtime and active member of the First  Universalist Church of Essex. Throughout these years she served as a volunteer in many both church and community projects.

In addition to her husband of forty years she is survived by two stepsons, Kevin J. Johnston and his wife Ruth A. of Wakefield, Brian M. Johnston and his wife Marie of Stoneham; three grandchildren, Kimberly Minor and her husband Christopher of Lynnfield, Brianna  and  Catrina Johnston both of Stoneham; great grandchildren, Victoria and Connor; two brothers, Albert and Carl Brown both of Essex and sisters, Sylvia Martin of Essex and Edna Goudreault of Salem. She was predeceased by a grandson, Eric Johnston formerly of Wakefield. 

Visiting hours will be Friday 9 to 11 am with a funeral service at 11 am in the Whittier-Porter Funeral Home, 6 High Street, Ipswich. Interment will follow in the Spring Street Cemetery, Essex. Family and friends are respectfully welcomed. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in her name may be made to: Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, 322 8th Ave Ste 800, NY,NY 10001.
