Michael J. Attridge

Michael J. Attridge, 66, of Linebrook Rd, Ipswich, husband of Ellen (Lloyd) Attridge, passed away peacefully at home on May 27, 2020 after a long battle with cancer.
Born in Worcester September 26, 1953, Mike was the son of the late Harold W. and Rita V. (Carroll) Attridge. He was raised in Somerville. He attended St. Joseph’s Elementary School, Boston College High School, and received a BA in Anthropology from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.  His career started at the Mass. Dept of Public Health where he became interested in computers. After training at Control Data Institute, he made a career as a computer programmer and systems architect.  His career took him to the San Francisco Bay, area where he worked for several companies including Ampex, Gap, and Visa.  A consulting opportunity took Michael and his family to Dublin, Ireland for a year, where he explored his family’s roots.  He then came back to Massachusetts, where he made his home in Essex for nineteen years before moving to Ipswich in 2019.  For the past thirteen years, Mike worked at MFS Investment Management in Boston.
Mike was an avid sailor. He learned to love the water during summers spent at his family’s cottage in Marshfield and sailed his first boat in Massachusetts Bay and around Cape Cod.   In California he lived aboard a sailboat in Redwood City, where he sailed San Francisco Bay and up and down the coast. His adventures included a transoceanic passage from Kauai to San Francisco. Back in Massachusetts, Mike sailed his twenty-three foot sailboat around Essex Bay.
Mike was a musician who was skilled at flute and piano, and he played in a rock band with friends.  A member of the First Universalist Church of Essex, he sang in the choir.
In addition to his wife of thirty years, he leaves behind his two children, Trevor and Veronica, and his brother Harold Attridge and his wife Janis of New Haven, CT, and their children Joshua and Rachel Attridge and their families.
A celebration of Mike’s life will be held at a later date. Arrangements will be announced by the Whittier-Porter Funeral Home of Ipswich.
