Maxine F. (Smith) Bowen



Maxine F. (Smith) Bowen, 88, of Caroline Avenue, Ipswich and wife of the late Wendell L. Bowen, died Sunday March 17, 2019 in the Beverly Hospital following her brief illness.
Born in Ipswich June 24, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Edgar J. and Lena May (Merritt) Smith. She was raised in Ipswich and graduated from Ipswich High School with the Class of 1948.
Married in 1950 in the First Church in Ipswich, the Bowens lived for several years in Beverly and returned to the North Shore after relocating briefly to Nashua NH. She continued her education at North Shore Community College and Gordon College, earning two Associates Degrees when she was forty-six years old. She opened the White Whale Drop-in Center for the elderly in Beverly and was also employed as a private health aide for North Shore Elder Services for many years.
She was a longtime member of the First Church in Ipswich. A passionate reader, she cherished her books and her Kindle which held hundreds of titles. She was also an enthusiastic Red Sox fan.
She is survived by her daughters, Janice Bowen of Denver, CO, Joanna Bowen of Swampscott and Joyce Bowen of Salem, a brother, Ronald Smith of NY, grandchildren David Bowen of Peabody, Matthew Bowen of TN, Christopher Bowen of PA, Jesse Bowen of Berlin, NH, and Paul Moutsoulas and Nasso Moutsoulas, both of Salem. She is also survived by ten greatgrandchildren, four great-greatgrandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was the mother of the late Lonny Bowen, formerly of MD, and sister of the late Edgar Smith, formerly of NY.
Her funeral services will be held graveside in the Highland Cemetery, Ipswich, at a later date to be announced by the Whittier-Porter Funeral Home of Ipswich.
Memorial contributions in her name may be made to the Friends of the Ipswich Public Library, Box 157, Ipswich, MA 01938.
