 Maureen J. (Sheppard) Rice

Maureen J. (Sheppard) Rice, 80, longtime High Street Ipswich resident, died Thursday January 3, 2019 at Masconomet Healthcare in Topsfield following her extended illness. She was the wife of the late Tom M. Rice.

Born November 16, 1938 in Ipswich, she was the daughter of the late Roland and Hilda (Comeau) Sheppard. She was raised in Ipswich and was a 1955 graduate of Ipswich High School. Married in 1956, the Rices lived on High Street where they raised their family. With a grown family, she went to work as a shipper and receiver and bookkeeper at Levere's Napa and later at Means Chevrolet in Ipswich for several years. She attended the First Church in Ipswich. She was an enthusiastic Patriots fan and loved to crochet for family and friends.

She is survived by her son, Tom M. Rice, her daughter, Beth A. Arvanites and her husband John, all of Ipswich, grandchildren Tom M. Rice, Lisa Marshall, Craig Arvanites and Callie Arvanites, great grandchildren Miranda Argilla Rice, Morgan Marshall, Blake Rice and Dylan Rice, and many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Roland Sheppard, Richard Sheppard, Norman Sheppard and Jeanne Ball, all formerly of Ipswich, and Betty Welch, formerly of Rowley.

Her funeral service will be held at 10am Saturday January 12 in the First Church in Ipswich, Meetinghouse Green. Family and friends are respectfully welcomed. Arrangements by the Whittier-Porter Funeral Home of Ipswich. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her name may be made to the Ipswich Humane Group, Box 873, Ipswich, MA 01938.
