Mabel G. (Rideout) Knowlton, 88, longtime of Eastern Avenue,
Essex, wife of the late Richard K. Knowlton, died Saturday December 20,
2008 in the Seacoast Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in
Gloucester following her long illness.
Born in Gloucester November 7, 1920, daughter of the late Robert
L. and Helen (Eaton) Rideout, she was a graduate of Gloucester
High School. Married in 1942, the Knowltons made their home and
raised their family on Eastern Avenue.
For thirty-seven years she was employed as a waitress at the
former Ship-Ahoy Restaurant in Essex, retiring in 1985.
She was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church.
Her family will be forever grateful for the care and love she
received from the staff at Atlantic Shores.
She is survived by a son, James K. Knowlton and his wife Carol
of Salisbury; a grandson, Paul Knowlton of Newburyport; a
sister, Carol Getty of Essex and many nephews and nieces. She
was the mother of the late Paul Knowlton formerly of Essex;
grandmother of the late Peter Knowlton formerly of Essex and
sister of the late John Eaton, David Eaton, Robert Eaton, Helen
Raymond, Liza Young, Victoria Rideout, and Louise Wolfe.
Visiting hours are Tuesday 4 to 7 pm in the Whittier-Porter
Funeral Home, 6 High Street, Ipswich. Family and friends are
respectfully welcomed. Interment in the Spring Street Cemetery
will be private. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in
her name may be made to the Seacoast Nursing & Rehabilitation
