Lucy H. (Leaman) Allen, 89, Concord Street, West Gloucester and
wife of the late Charles Allen, died Wednesday, February 10,
2010 in the Seacoast Nursing and Rehabilitation Center,
Gloucester following her long illness.
Born in Gloucester November 24, 1920, daughter of the late
Edward B. and Ellen E. (Herrick) Leaman, she was raised in
Gloucester where she attended public schools. Married in 1944 to
Charles Allen she lived for four years in Detroit while he
served with the Navy. During these years she was employed as an
art retoucher with New Art Laboratories of Detroit. Following
the war the Allens returned to West Gloucester where they made
their home. For several years she modeled for the Browns
Department Store in Gloucester and worked in sales at a local
jewelers.
Lucy was an avid outdoors woman. She enjoyed hunting,
snowshoeing, clamming, boating and swimming with her late
husband. She also enjoyed music, playing the piano and
ballroom dancing. She researched genealogy and was proud that
her waterfront home was built on her grandmother’s land which
had been in the family for many generations.
She is survived by a brother, Stanley Leaman of Essex; four
sisters, Bertha M. Robertson of Gloucester, Emily B. Strangman
of Rowley, Nancy Boland of Ipswich and Mary E. Lee of Bristol,
NH, and many nephews and nieces. She was the sister of the late
Harold B. Leaman.
Her funeral service will be held Friday February 12, 11 am
graveside in the Beechbrook Cemetery, W. Gloucester. Family and
friends are respectfully welcomed. Arrangements are under the
direction of the Whittier-Porter Funeral Home of Ipswich. In
lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in her name may be made
to the National Alzheimer’s Assoc., 225 N. Michigan Ave., Fl.
17, Chicago, IL 60601.
