Lorraine (Duggan) Barowy

Lorraine (Duggan) Barowy, 89, longtime resident of High Street, Ipswich, and wife of the late Joseph Barowy, died Sunday, April 26, 2015 in the Masconomet Healthcare Center, Topsfield following her long illness.

Born in Newburyport  August 29, 1925, one of the three children  of the late Michael C. and Celina (Levesque) Duggan, she   was raised in Newburyport and   was a 1943 graduate of Newburyport High School.  Married that year in Barton, VT,  the Barowys made their home in Newburyport where she was employed at the former CBS Hytron and later at Sylvania in Ipswich.  Soon following the death of her father-in-law,  she and her husband  moved to Ipswich and raised their family in the house they built at the former Barowy Farm on High Street. With a grown family she and her husband enjoyed extensive world travel, having twice been around the world.

Mrs. Barowy  was a longtime communicant of St. Joseph Parish and Our Lady of Hope Church, was  a member of the St. Jean Society and served as the Sunshine Officer with Catholic Woman’s Club.

She is survived by a son, James W. Barowy and his wife Jean of CA; two daughters, Judith Cosgrove wife of the late Marty Cosgrave of Weymouth, and Janice Gillissen and her husband Raymond of Ipswich; seven grandchildren, Denise Trott of Abington, Mark Litterio of Weymouth, James Litterio of Braintree, Tanya Ames of Scituate, Tory Rettkowski of Byfield, and Joseph Barowy and Nicole Houle both of VA; ten great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Mary Duggan of Newburyport and many nephews and nieces. She was the mother of the late Joseph C. Barowy formerly of HI and sister of the late Clement Duggan formerly of Newburyport and Robert Duggan formerly of CA.

Her funeral will be held 9 am Friday from the Whittier-Porter Funeral Home, 6 High Street, Ipswich followed by the celebration of a Funeral Mass of Christian Burial in Our Lady of Hope Church, Linebrook Road, Ipswich. Interment will be in the St. Marys Cemetery, Newburyport. Family and friends are respectfully welcomed. Visiting hours are  Thursday 4 to 8 pm.
