Lawrence Smith Burke, Jr.
Lawrence Smith Burke, Jr. died on July 11, 2020
after a short illness. He had lived many years in St. Petersburg, Florida
and his later years in New Jersey with or near his sister, Judith.
He graduated from Winthrop High School and after
graduation from Harvard University in 1955, served as a Second Lieutenant
in the US Army, stationed in England. With a varied career, he taught
school, worked as a park ranger, and particularly enjoyed working as a
greenskeeper at various golf courses. An outdoorsman, he was known for his
prodigious walking. A life-long adherent to the American Baptist
denomination, he sought a church wherever he lived.
He was particularly fond of and devoted to his
siblings and their children. Attentive to birthdays and celebrations, he
remembered each of his grand nieces and nephews with tokens of his love,
sending two-dollar bills or a jumble. He will be sorely missed by his
extended family who will remember him as kind, gentle and generous.
He was predeceased by his sister Marilyn and leaves
his brother Roger, of Islesboro, Maine and his sister Judith, of Ocean
Grove, New Jersey. A service of remembrance and burial was held at Cedar
Grove Cemetery in Dorchester, Massachusetts on July 21, 2020.
