Joyce I. Wood, 75, formerly of the
Hovey School Condos in Gloucester and longtime resident of Water Street,
Essex, died Monday, November 26, 2018 at the Blueberry Hill Rehabilitation
Center in Beverly, following her long and courageous battle with dementia.
Joyce was born in Essex on April 11, 1943, the
daughter of the late Parlee “Brud” and Bessie (McKay) Wood. She was raised
in Essex and was a graduate of Gloucester High School, Class of 1961. For
several years she was employed at the M.I.T. Labs in Cambridge where she
worked with her dear friends Janie Argento and Eileen Bonk. Leaving the
Big City in 1965, she returned to Essex to help her parents at the
family’s Red Barrel Pub in Essex, which she owned and operated until its’
closure in 2012.
She is survived by her “sister-cousins,” Jerrilyn
Girman of Michigan, Juanita Berube of Groveland and Jacqueline Morton of
Newburyport; a brother, Eugene Wood and many friends and former customers
from the pub.
Her family would like to thank Senior Services of
Gloucester and especially Renee Gauthier and her staff and for Larry
Tennis and Dennis Cargill for the kindness they shared.
Joyce was one of a kind and will be greatly missed.

Her funeral service will be held 11 am Tuesday, December 4, 2018 graveside
in the Spring Street Cemetery, Essex. Family and friends are cordially
welcomed. Arrangements are under the direction of the Whittier-Porter
Funeral Home of Ipswich.
