Joseph David Short

Joseph David Short, 77, a long-time resident of Ipswich, entered into eternal life on Tuesday, September 7, 2021, following a battle with cancer.

Joseph was born in Memphis, Tennessee on May 9, 1944, the son of the late Sammons Short and Gladys (Watkins) Short. He was the husband of nearly thirty years to the late M. Donnelly “Donna” (Caldwell) Short. Joseph graduated from the University of Memphis in 1966 receiving his Bachelor of Arts in Theater. He served in the Peace Corps, spending two years in Grand Cess, Liberia, followed by service in Vietnam with the U.S. Defense Language Institute. He lived in Paris for several years working for Honeywell, and briefly ran a small pensione in Switzerland where he honed his cooking and baking skills, before returning to the States. During his career, he worked as a personnel manager in international training at GTE (General Telephone and Electronics Corporation, now Verizon), and as a life-long learner pursued a master’s degree in special education from Simmons College. He was an educator for decades at the Landmark School in Beverly.

Joseph was a devoted member of Christ Church of Hamilton-Wenham. A proud Christian and liberal, he maintained a robust community of like-minded friends, traveled extensively to broaden his view of the world, and maintained close friendships with those near and far. He and Donna had a much-loved house in Roquebrun, Occitanie, France for many years.

Joseph is survived by many loving nieces, nephews, friends, and his two beloved dogs, whom he would be relieved and appreciative to know have found a new loving home.

His funeral service with Eucharist will be held Saturday, September 18 at 10 am in the Chapel of Christ Church, Hamilton-Wenham. His cremated remains will be interred in the St. Francis Garden of the Christ Church. Family and friends are cordially welcomed; however, due to COVID restrictions, there will be no on-site reception. Friends and family may choose to remember him at sites of their choosing. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his name may be made to Christ Church, 149 Asbury St, South Hamilton, MA 01982 or a charitable organization of your choice. Arrangements are under the direction of the Whittier-Porter Funeral Home of Ipswich.
