Joseph David Short
Joseph David Short, 77, a long-time resident of
Ipswich, entered into eternal life on Tuesday, September 7, 2021,
following a battle with cancer.
Joseph was born in Memphis, Tennessee on May 9,
1944, the son of the late Sammons Short and Gladys (Watkins) Short. He was
the husband of nearly thirty years to the late M. Donnelly “Donna”
(Caldwell) Short. Joseph graduated from the University of Memphis in 1966
receiving his Bachelor of Arts in Theater. He served in the Peace Corps,
spending two years in Grand Cess, Liberia, followed by service in Vietnam
with the U.S. Defense Language Institute. He lived in Paris for several
years working for Honeywell, and briefly ran a small pensione in
Switzerland where he honed his cooking and baking skills, before returning
to the States. During his career, he worked as a personnel manager in
international training at GTE (General Telephone and Electronics
Corporation, now Verizon), and as a life-long learner pursued a master’s
degree in special education from Simmons College. He was an educator for
decades at the Landmark School in Beverly.
Joseph was a devoted member of Christ Church of
Hamilton-Wenham. A proud Christian and liberal, he maintained a robust
community of like-minded friends, traveled extensively to broaden his view
of the world, and maintained close friendships with those near and far. He
and Donna had a much-loved house in Roquebrun, Occitanie, France for many
Joseph is survived by many loving nieces, nephews,
friends, and his two beloved dogs, whom he would be relieved and
appreciative to know have found a new loving home.
His funeral service with Eucharist will be held
Saturday, September 18 at 10 am in the Chapel of Christ Church,
Hamilton-Wenham. His cremated remains will be interred in the St. Francis
Garden of the Christ Church. Family and friends are cordially welcomed;
however, due to COVID restrictions, there will be no on-site reception.
Friends and family may choose to remember him at sites of their choosing.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his name may be made to
Christ Church, 149 Asbury St, South Hamilton, MA 01982 or a charitable
organization of your choice. Arrangements are under the direction of the
Whittier-Porter Funeral Home of Ipswich.
