James A. “Jimmy” Dort

James A. “Jimmy” Dort, 69, longtime companion of Jean F. Knowlton of Market Street, Ipswich, died Friday, November 16, 2018 in the Kaplan Family Hospice House, Danvers following his long illness.

Born in Ipswich on June 30, 1949, he was one of the six children of the late Garland C. Dort and Eleanore A. (Aitken) Dort Gibbs. Jimmy attended the St. Stanislaus Parochial School and then Ipswich High School which he left to join the U.S. Marine Corps. Jimmie served as a forward with the Marines in two tours of duty in Vietnam where he had twice been wounded in action. Soon following his discharge he settled in Alameda, CA where he worked in construction. He returned to Ipswich in 1989 and has since been employed as a bartender. He worked full time at the Ipswich AMVETS and had worked part time at both the Kosciusko Club and the St. Lawrence Club of Ipswich. An avid fan of Boston pro-sports, he also enjoyed summers fishing in the local waters.

He was a member of the Ipswich AMVETS Post #201 and Knights of Columbus Carrollton Club 498.

In addition to his companion Jean he is survived by a stepson, Joshua Knowlton of Pelham, NH; two sisters, Sandra McDonald of CA and Debra Sebastian of Salisbury and many nephews and nieces.

A Memorial Funeral Mass will be held 9 am Saturday, December 15 in Our Lady of Hope Church, 1 Pineswamp Road, Ipswich. Family and friends are respectfully welcomed. His interment will be private. Arrangements are under the direction of the Whittier-Porter Funeral Home of Ipswich.  In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in his name may be may to the AMVETS Scholarship Fund, 49 Market Street, Ipswich, MA 01938.
