Hilda M. Hamelin, 98, formerly of Elm Street, Ipswich,
passed away peacefully Saturday, October 8, 2016 at
Belmont Manor in Belmont, where she had wonderful and
loving care for the past nine years.
Born in Lynn on September 22, 1918, she was the daughter
of the late Henry and Nellie (Marriott) Hamelin. She
lived in Ipswich most of her life and attended Ipswich
public schools. She worked from a very young age until
she retired from Sylvania, when Sylvania closed its
doors.
Hilda was an avid knitter, making argyle sweaters and
socks for all of her family and friends. Although she
never had any children of her own, dozens of people
lovingly still call her “Auntie Hilda.”
She was a lifelong member of Ascension Memorial Church.
She leaves her niece, Margo Hagerty Bergantino, of
Waltham; her cousin, T. Louis (Bud) Hamelin and his son,
Thomas of Georgetown and several great and grand nieces
and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters, Bernice
Robishaw, Charlotte LeBosquet Lambert, Hazel Herndon,
Flora Hagerty and her brother, Thomas Hamelin.
God has called her home. She will be interred with a
private service in the Cowles Memorial Cemetery in
Ipswich. Arrangements are under the direction of the
Whittier-Porter Funeral Home of Ipswich.
