Henry C. Martel

Henry C. Martel, 87, husband of Francesca B. (Canejo) Martel of Grenada Lane, Rochester, NH, died Tuesday, January 22, 2013  in the Hyder Family Hospice House, Dover, NH following his long illness.

Born in Ipswich, February 13, 1925 son of the late Arthur R. and Stella M. (Trudel) Martel, he attended St. Stanislaus Parochial School and Ipswich High School.

During World War II he served in the Florida Keys with the U.S. Coast Guard. Married in 1949, the Martels made their home and raised their family on Boxford Road in Rowley. During these years he was employed by the Commonwealth of Mass Department of Public Works as a truck driver, retiring in 1985 after forty years of service. 

He was very athletic and  a man of high energy. He was a member of several local bowling teams, having played on TV show Candlepins for Cash, and was  a captain in both  adult amateur baseball and hockey.

Mr. Martel was a member of the Mass.  D.A.V., Rowley V.F.W. Post #5707,   Boston American Legion Post #462  and was a communicant of St. Mary's Church in Rowley.

In addition to his wife of sixty-four years he is survived by a son, Michael H. Martel  of Schenectady, NY; a daughter, Joanne Meltzer and her husband Dr. Jack of Marblehead; three grandchildren, Michael Ciaramitaro of Rochester, NH, Anthony Ciaramitaro of Gloucester and Maria Teresa Lees of Attleboro; six great grandchildren, Jasmin, Spencer, Samantha, Peter, Adeline Mae and Sophia Francesca; a great great grandchild, Noah; a brother, Francis Martel of Naples, FL and three sisters, Emma Chumura and Stella Lavalle both of Ipswich and  Sister Angeline Martel of Marlborough.

His funeral service will be held 10 am, Thursday, January 24, 2013  in the Whittier-Porter Funeral Home, 6 High Street, Ipswich followed by interment with Military Honors in  St. Mary's Cemetery, North Street, Salem. Family and friends are respectfully welcomed.

Visitation will be  Thursday from 8:30 am to time of service.
