Helen Christopher,92, lifelong of
Ipswich, died Wednesday December 31, 2008 in the Caldwell Skilled
Nursing & Rehabilitation Center following her brief illness.
Born in
Ipswich October 16,
1916, one of the eight children of the late James and Bessie (Georgeopoulos)
Christopher, she was educated in Ipswich public schools. For
thirty-five years was employed at Sylvania in Ipswich, working in
many departments before her retirement in 1981.
She
enjoyed her home flower garden and cooking and baking Greek
specialties for her family and friends. For much of her life she
served as the dedicated caretaker for her late mother and brother
“Ted.” She will be remembered by her nephews and nieces for her
shared and open love for them and the special bond she had with
each.
She
was a lifelong member of the Ipswich Greek Orthodox Church where she
was a faithful member of the choir since she was a young girl.
She
is survived by two nephews, Othon
Mavro of Wayland and John Christopher of
Gloucester; three
nieces, Betty Furey of Nashua and Bette
Livesey and
Kathy Christopher both of Ipswich and many great and great
great nephews and nieces. She was the
sister of the late Peter Christopher, formerly of Ipswich, Bob
Christopher, formerly of Salem, George Christopher, formerly of
Gloucester, Anthony and Elefterios “Ted”
Christopher and Jennie Mavro, all
formerly of Ipswich, and Katherine Rizas,
formerly of Dorchester.
Her
funeral will be held Monday January 5,2009 at
9 am from the
Whittier-Porter Funeral home, 6 High Street, Ipswich followed by a
service at 10 am in the Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox
Church, 8 Lafayette Road, Ipswich. Interment will be in the New
Highland Cemetery, Ipswich. Family and friends are respectfully
welcomed. Visiting hours are Sunday 3 to 6 pm. In lieu of flowers,
memorial contributions in her name may be made to the Greek Orthodox
Church, P.O. Box 6, Ipswich, MA 01938.
