Gloria M. (Reiker) Story

Gloria M. (Reiker) Story, 90, formerly of Apple Street, Essex, and devoted wife of forty-three years to the late Edwin Story, died Monday January 15, 2018 in the Kaplan Family Hospice, Danvers.

Born in Beverly, April 17, 1927, the only child of the late Charles J. and Mary E. (McDermott) Reiker, she was a 1944 graduate of Saint Mary’s High School. She continued her education at Burdett College, graduating in 1947. Mrs. Story began her career as the medical secretary to Dr. Ross and Dr. Hart of Beverly.  After settling with her husband and family in Essex, she served as the Secretary to the Essex Board of Selectmen for twenty years.  As an active and devoted member of the community, Mrs. Story served on many boards and committees, including the Board of Library Trustees, Council on Aging, Essex Housing Authority for fourteen years, and the Essex Senior Citizens Club where she served as President.

In her youth, Mrs. Story enjoyed summers at her family’s camp on Pleasant Pond in Wenham.  She was an accomplished pianist and taught piano to children in her home. She was an avid reader, and  could often be found  reading or playing piano in her favorite “piano room”. 

She is survived by a son, Lyndon R. Story of Essex; three daughters, Kendra Story of Danvers, Roberta Tyack and her husband Bill of Hamilton,  Alicia Piscitello of Boston, four grandchildren, Mary Morrow and her husband Daniel  of Ipswich, Brendan Piscitello and his wife Jennifer of Danvers, Kaitlyn Piscitello of Gloucester,  Devan Story of Danvers and five great grandchildren, Addeline, Bradley, Brooke, Benjamin, and Brianna.  She was the mother of the late Thomas R. Crowley and former wife of the late Corneilius F. Crowley.

An hour of visitation from 10 am will precede her 11 am funeral service Saturday January 20 in the Whittier-Porter Funeral Home, 6 High St., Ipswich. Family and friends are respectfully welcomed. Interment in the Spring Street Cemetery, Essex will follow. Memorial contributions in her name may be made to the Michael Heitz Memorial Fund, c/o Beverly Bank, 48 Enon St., Beverly, MA 01915.
