Frederick A. Garand, 70, husband of Kathleen A. (Hayes) Garand,
longtime of Allen Lane, Ipswich, died Sunday April 19, 2009 in
the Kaplan Family Hospice House, Danvers, following his long
illness.
Born in Ipswich November 30, 1938, he was the only child of the
late Adelard E. and Jennie A. (Budzianowski) Garand. He was
raised in Ipswich, a 1956 graduate of Ipswich High School, and a
graduate of the Beverly Trade School where he trained as a
machinist. For fifteen years, and until its’ closing, he was
employed as a tool and dye maker at the United Shoe Machine in
Beverly. He then worked for twenty-three years as a machinist at
GTE Sylvania in Ipswich and at Osram Sylvania in Danvers until
his retirement.
Mr. Garand was an avid baseball fan. He enjoyed playing baseball
in the Under Thirty and later in the Over Thirty local leagues.
He was a member of the former Sacred Heart Church of Ipswich and
Our Lady of Hope Parish of Ipswich, the P.L.A.V. Post #92 in
Ipswich and the St. Lawrence Literary Society of Ipswich.
In addition to his wife of forty years he is survived by two
sons, Scott Garand and his wife Michele of Haverhill and Peter
Garand and his wife Amanda of North Carolina, and three
grandchildren, Alexander and Andrea Garand both of North
Carolina and Evan Garand of Haverhill.
His funeral will be held Wednesday April 22 at 8 am from the
Whittier-Porter Funeral Home, 6 High Street, Ipswich, followed
by a Funeral Mass at 9 am in Our Lady of Hope Church, Pineswamp
Road, Ipswich. Family and friends are respectfully welcomed.
Burial will follow in the New Highland Cemetery, Ipswich. In
lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his name may be made
to Hospice of the North Shore, 75 Sylvan St., Suite B-102,
Danvers, MA 01923.
