Eleanor M. (Stone) Peatfield

Eleanor M. (Stone) Peatfield, 93, wife of the late Gardner Peatfield, died Monday, October 28, 2019 in the Port Healthcare Center, Newburyport following her long illness.

Born in Ipswich on April 3, 1926 she was one of ten children of the late Chester and Ruby (Earley) Stone. Eleanor, a 1944 graduate of Ipswich High School, was a lifelong resident of Ipswich. She was married in 1957 in the Immanuel Baptist Church and soon made her home on Appleton Park where she raised her family and lived for the next forty years. Following the death of her husband she moved to her home at Oak Hill, Ipswich.  She had been first employed as a teller for several years at the First National Bank of Ipswich, then as a bookkeeper for twenty-five years working “mother’s hours” at the former Hill’s Men's Store in Ipswich. Following the fire at Hill's she went to work at the Ipswich Chronicle from which she retired. She also served for many years as a volunteer at the Beverly Hospital. She was the longest living member of the Immanuel Baptist Church.

Eleanor enjoyed many hours knitting for her family and friends and playing cribbage and whist.

She is survived by a son, Lawrence W. Peatfield of Ipswich; a daughter, Joann Peatfield of Exeter, NH; four sisters, Charlotte Tesko of Hamilton, Marlene Shannon of Ipswich, Grace Cullen of Amesbury, Patricia Simons of N. Hampton, NH and many nephews and nieces. She was the sister of the late Gardner Stone, Norman Stone, Chester Stone, Jr., Donald Stone, all formerly of Ipswich, and Margaret Bailey formerly of Georgetown.

Her funeral service will be held 11 am Friday, November 1, 2019 in the Immanuel Baptist Church, 45 Central Street, Ipswich followed by interment in the Cowles Memorial Cemetery, Ipswich. Family and friends are respectfully welcomed. Visiting hours will be Wednesday October 30, 4 to 7 pm in the Whittier-Porter Funeral Home, 6 High St., Ipswich. Memorial contributions in her name may be made to Port Healthcare Resident Activity Fund, c/o Port Healthcare, 113 Low St, Newburyport, MA 01950.
