Born in St. John, New Brunswick April 25, 1927 she was the daughter
of the late Rev. Archibald G. and Catherine E. (Lane) Philpotts
of Malvern, England. She grew up in St. John, and spent many summers
in Fairfield, New Brunswick where she met J. Royce Brown. She and
Royce were married on July 27, 1946 at the “Stone Church” in St.
John. Her brother Gordon assisted in the ceremony and her Dad, now
an Army Captain, was home to give the bride away. The reception was
held at the York Hotel on King Street in St. John.
The couple honeymooned in
Ottawa then settled in Mystic, Connecticut, where Royce grew up. In
1948, they moved to Chicago as Royce attended the DeVry Institute.
Eleanor worked as a personal shopper in Von Lengerke & Antoine,
which later became Abercrombie and Fitch. Many of her customers
were movie stars. After eighteen months, they returned home to
Mystic, and built their first house while Royce attended Mitchell
College. In 1954, they sold the house and moved (with their black
cocker spaniel, Rags) to Kingston, RI as Royce attended URI. Eleanor
worked in the Campus Bookstore in the Student Union while Royce
attended classes They met many of their longtime friends while
living in a mobile home with other student families.
After Royce’s graduation
in 1957, they moved to Burlington. Garth arrived in December, 1959
and Anne in March, 1960. In September of 1962, the family packed
their bags for a three year tour in Kwajalein, Marshall Islands, in
the South Pacific, as Royce, an engineer working for MIT Lincoln
Labs, was sent to work on a Department of Defense project. Eleanor
described those years as some of the greatest of her life. She met
many of her closest and dearest friends while there.
a brief stint back in Burlington, the family packed up again and
moved to Billings, Montana for a year. Finally back to Burlington
where she cultivated many long-lasting friendships. After raising
her family for nineteen years, she went back to work at Raytheon as
an administrative assistant for a Divisional Head in the Missile
Systems Division. She retired in 1993 and a year later moved to
Ipswich, where she lived until her death. She loved living in
Ipswich as she was near her son and his family and, of course, the
ocean, which she loved. She quickly developed a great many new
friends in her new Bayside Village neighborhood. She treasured her
friends, and especially her four grandchildren. She created many
“Nana Memories”, and we are all grateful now for each and every one.
