Effie M. (Story) Andrews

Effie M. (Story) Andrews, 98, of Essex and the beloved wife of the late Walter H. Andrews died Monday, January 10, 2022 in the Blueberry Hill Healthcare Center in Beverly following her brief illness.

Effie was born in Essex on Christmas Eve 1923, one of the four children of the late Lawrence I. and Celesta F. (Burnham) Story.

A lifelong Essex resident, she was educated in Essex, a graduate of the former Choate School in Essex. Married in 1951 the Andrews made their home in Essex where they raised their family. Prior to, during, and for the years following the WWII she was employed as an assembler at Sylvania in Ipswich. With a grown family she served for many years doing details and matron duties for the Essex Police Department including years as a crossing guard. She also volunteered at the Essex Scout House and for the Council on Aging.  Effie was a longtime member and pillar of the former United Methodist Church of Essex. She and her husband Walter worked tirelessly preparing for the church fairs and their many bean suppers.  Most recently she has attended the United Methodist Church in Hamilton.

Effie spent many hours knitting shawls and scarfs for family, friends and hospice as well as dozens of baby blankets.

She, Walter and family spent many enjoyable days going ‘down river.’

She is survived by a son, Peter W. Andrews and his wife Nancy of Ipswich; a daughter, Paula F. Blunda and her husband Stephen of Rowley; a granddaughter, Michelle Blunda of Epping, NH; a sister, Florence White of Reading and several nephews and nieces. She was the grandmother of the late Michael Blunda, formerly of Rowley and the sister of the late Frank E. and Paul E. Story, both formerly of Essex.

Her funeral service will be held Saturday, January 15 at noon in the Spring Street Cemetery, Essex. Family and friends are cordially welcomed. Arrangements are under the direction of the Whittier-Porter Funeral Home of Ipswich. Memorial contributions in her name may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
