Edgar Emery Libby Jr

Edgar Emery Libby Jr., 93, beloved husband of the late Sally McKay Libby  of Willowdale Road, Topsfield, passed away peacefully on Sunday October 22, 2017 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers, following a brief illness.

Never one to lose his sense of humor, the visiting minister asked if he could do anything and Edgar replied “make sure that the gates are open!”

Edgar was born in Newton on November 18, 1923 son of the late Edgar Emery and Anne (Youett) Libby. Edgar was raised in Newton and graduated from Newton High School, Class of 1942. After graduation he  worked as a window display trimmer at Jordan Marsh in Boston,  enlisting  in the Army in the following  March of 1943. From Ft. Bragg, NC he was assigned to the 995th Field Artillery Battalion, of the 5th Army under General Mark Clark and served in Northern Africa, Italy and France. After the war ended he was assigned to the army of occupation in Germany with the 9th Infantry Division under General George Patton. He was awarded 5 battle stars: Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, Southern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. He was awarded a medal of good conduct and the European African Middle Eastern Theatre Campaign Ribbon. Edgar was honorably discharged in October of 1945.

Following the war he was employed by his uncle at David B. Church Real Estate & Insurance. He remained in the insurance industry his entire career and was a special agent & supervisor for large national accounts with the National Union Insurance Company, Glens Falls Insurance Company and the Commercial Union Insurance Company.

Edgar enjoyed traveling with his wife Sally and his sisters Constance and Dorothy. Numerous trips were made to Europe and to visit his children and grandchildren across the United States.

He is survived by his two sons, Richard E. Libby and his wife Sheryl of Ipswich, and Scott K. Libby of Topsfield; five grandchildren, Benjamin M. Libby, Emily W. Libby, Jenna Libby and Nicole Libby and step granddaughter Alicia Didio. In addition to his late wife of sixty-four years he was predeceased by a sister Constance Libby Hodgkins of Rochester, NY and Dorothy Libby Hale of Vero Beach, FL.

His funeral service will be held 10 am Friday, November 3, 2017 in  the Topsfield Congregational Church, Common Street, Topsfield. Interment with Military Honors will follow in the Hamilton Cemetery, 623 Bay Road, Hamilton. Family and friends are respectfully welcomed. Arrangements are under the direction of the Whittier-Porter Funeral Home of Ipswich.
