Charles B. Bateman, 97, of Essex Road, Ipswich, husband of the late
Ruth C. (McGaunn)
Bateman, passed
away peacefully at home on September 1, 2013. Born May 6, 1916 in
Baltimore, MD, he was the son of the late Percy and Maud (Callis)
Bateman. He was a graduate of the University of Alabama.
Ruth and Charles married in 1940. During
World War II he proudly served in the US Army, and in 1949 he joined
the Air Force Reserve, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. Moving to
Ipswich he went to work at the United Shoe Machinery Corp in
Beverly, and shortly before his retirement he went back to school,
earning a law degree from Suffolk University. While in retirement,
Charles operated a successful antique business with his
wife, becoming a master furniture refinisher and restorer of
antiques.
He
is survived by his two sons, Charles B. Bateman, Jr. and his wife
Linda of Brentwood, CA and Philip C. Bateman and his wife Katherine
of Centerville; two daughters, Janice C. Burnes and her husband
Richard of Bedford and Marilee (Bateman) Strom of Shingletown, CA.;
nine grandchildren, Lisa Litchfield, Lori Harding, Douglas Burnes
and Lindsay Opdyke of MA, Colby Bateman of TX; Randy Bateman, Keith
Bateman, Brent Bateman and Todd Bateman of CA; twelve great
grandchildren and a brother, John Bateman and his wife Patricia of
Matthews, VA. He was the brother of the late Edward Bateman of Water
Island, St. Thomas.
A
private service will be held at the National Cemetery in Bourne,
Massachusetts. Arrangements are under the direction of the Whittier
Funeral Home of Ipswich. Memorial contributions in his name may be
made to the charity of one’s choice.
