Bruce Allan Cutway

Bruce Allan Cutway, 67, formerly of Ipswich, died
on Monday, November 30, 2020, while sitting in his armchair, at home in
Kingston, Ontario.
A native of Kingston, he attended Rideau Public School, Fairfield and
Amherstview Public Schools and Ernestown Secondary School until grade 10.
In 1968, he moved with his parents to Ipswich. He graduated from Ipswich
High School in 1970, Cardinal Cushing Academy in 1971, and Queen’s
University in 1979 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology. As a child
in Kingston, he played hockey in the Church Athletic League and remembered
fondly spending Saturday nights watching “Hockey Night in Canada” with his
beloved grandmother Florence Compton, an avid Leafs fan (he cheered for
the Chicago Blackhawks at the time.) He continued to play hockey in
Ipswich as a member of the high school team and later served in a coaching
role for the team.
Bruce lived in Ipswich for twenty years where he worked in the building
trade as a carpenter and painter and as a bartender. He became a US
citizen in 1981. His time in Ipswich was the happiest of his life. But,
conflicted between his love of Ipswich and his loyalty to his family, he
returned to Kingston in 1988 and had brief careers in real estate and
banking after which he worked for a call centre in Peterborough, an
armored car company in Toronto and odd jobs in Kingston. He was the
primary caregiver for his beloved Aunt Marjorie for five years.
Bruce was diagnosed with epilepsy in the early years of this century and
struggled with depression all his life, and more recently with other
health issues.
The family is grateful to our cousin, Jim Simmons of Sudbury, who provided
Bruce a place to live, and Jim’s family who supported Bruce in other ways
before his death.
Bruce was predeceased by his parents, Rodney and Norma (Compton) Cutway
and his brother Don. He is survived by his brother Steve and his wife
Nancy of Kingston; his sister-in-law Marie Cutway of Aldie, VA; nieces
Sarah Meadows of Aldie and Laura Cutway and her husband Alex Baumann of
Washington DC; cousin Jim Simmons and his wife Carmen of Sudbury and his
family, and other Cutway cousins. Bruce is fondly remembered by his many
American friends and his lifelong friend, Bill Head and his family of
Amherstview and Kingston.
Funeral services at
Cataraqui Cemetery will take place at a later date.
Bruce loved animals. Donations to Kingston Humane Society 1 Binnington
Crt., Kingston, ON K7M 8M9, or a charity of your choice would be
appreciated by the family.
