Arthur James Grimes, III
Arthur “James” Grimes, III, 75, of Topsfield, formerly longtime resident
of Ipswich, passed away on January 12, 2023 at the Masconomet Healthcare
Center in Topsfield after a lengthy illness.
James was born on January 23, 1947 in Ipswich, son of the late Dr. Arthur
James Grimes, Jr. and Mary Constance (Tozier) Grimes. James grew up in
Ipswich and was a proud 1964 graduate of Ipswich High School.
He graduated from Boston College in 1968 and went on to earn an MBA
from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business in 1970.
He had a successful career that spanned forty years in private and
municipal finance. James married Linda George of Ipswich in 1978 and lived
in Ipswich for most of his life.
James served as the Moderator of the Ipswich Town meeting for over thirty
years. He loved the Town of
Ipswich and felt a sense of duty to serve the town. He was a longtime
member and served as an officer for the Massachusetts Moderators
Association. Throughout his life, he was active in many local preservation
and charitable organizations. In
his retirement years, James worked with the Sisters of Notre Dame in
Ipswich as a driver and transportation coordinator.
He loved meeting and working with so many wonderful people during
his time there. James enjoyed
spending time with his friends in Ipswich, particularly his regular group
of friends on Thursday nights.
A kind and friendly man, he was extremely generous with his time
and always sought to help everyone he met in whatever way he could.
He loved his family and his friends, with whom he would spend hours
around Ipswich. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He was a
loving and supporting father to Jenny and Joey and enjoyed watching them
play sports and grow up in his hometown.
In later years, he was a doting and kind grandfather known as
“Grampy” or “Papa Jim” and loved nothing more than seeing and spending
time with his four grandsons.
He was adored by all his nieces and nephews who cherished their “Uncle
James.” As his illness progressed, James was cared for with tremendous
professionalism and compassion from the staff at the Masconomet Healthcare
James is survived by his daughter, Jennifer Quigley and her husband Mike
of Stoneham; his son, Josiah Grimes and his wife Cori of Topsfield and
four grandsons, Michael Quigley, William Quigley, Joey Grimes and Benjamin
Grimes. He is also survived
by his sister Shelia Bodwell; his brother, David Grimes and his wife
Sharon, of Ipswich; many nieces and nephews and his former wife, Linda
(George) Grimes of Ipswich. In addition to his parents he was predeceased
by two brothers, Stephen Grimes, Christopher Grimes; brother-in-law Robert
G. Bodwell and sister-in-law, Cheryl Grimes.
His funeral will be held 8 am Friday, January 20 from the Whittier-Porter
Funeral Home, 6 High Street, Ipswich followed by the celebration of a
Funeral Mass of Christian Burial at 9 am in Our Lady of Hope Church, 1
Pineswamp Road, Ipswich. Family and friends are respectfully welcomed.
Visiting hours will be held Thursday from 4 to 7 pm. Interment will be in
the New Highland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial
