Ada Pond (Whittlesey) Beckwith

Ada Pond (Whittlesey) Beckwith, 97, formerly of Edge Street, Ipswich died January 24, 2018 at Avita of Newburyport, after a brief illness. She was married for 49 years to the late Robert E. “Bob” Beckwith.

 

 Ada was born April 11, 1920 in Hartford CT, daughter of the late David L., Sr. and the late Jennet (Hurlburt) Whittlesey. She grew up in Elmwood, a section of West Hartford, and spent summers at Bantam Lake in Morris. She graduated from William H. Hall High School and worked in the insurance industry in Hartford. After marriage in 1946, Ada and Bob moved to Boston while Bob attended Gordon School of Theology and Missions (now Gordon College in Wenham).  In 1951 they moved to Knott County, KY where they served for twenty years with Scripture Memory Mountain Mission and raised six children. The family returned to Massachusetts in 1971, settling in Ipswich. Ada was the Mailroom Supervisor at Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary until retirement in 1985. An avid reader and lover of books, she was a longtime volunteer at the Ipswich Public Library.

 

Ada is survived by son David R. Beckwith and his wife Pat of West Newbury, Daniel B. Beckwith and his wife Heidi; two daughters, Robin Goodwin and her husband Bob of Mercer, ME,

Lois Lord and her husband Jonathan of Warner, NH; three grandchildren, Andrew Beckwith of Wenham, Abigail Patel of NJ, Sarah Cox of CA and eight great grandchildren. She is also

survived by a brother-in-law Bruce Beckwith and his wife Louise of CT; a sister-in-law, Claire Livingston and her husband Bob of IN and  many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two daughters, Darlene Beckwith formerly of Greenfield and Diane Beckwith formerly of CA; a great grandson, infant Jonathan Beckwith; a sister, Mary H. Gledhill and a brother, David L.Whittlesey both of CT.

 

Her committal service will be held at 12 noon, Monday February 5, graveside in the Cowles Memorial Cemetery, Town Farm Road, Ipswich followed by a Memorial Service at 1:00 pm in the  First Presbyterian Church, 179 County Road, Ipswich. Family and friends are respectfully welcomed. Arrangements are under the direction of the Whittier-Porter Funeral Home in Ipswich.
