Gladys M. (Mears) Bruce, 87 of longtime of Apple Street, Essex, died
Monday, August 11, 2008 in the Beverly Hospital following her brief
illness.
Born in Ipswich July 25, 1921,she was the only child of the late
George M. and Annie M. (Lufkin) Mears. She attended Essex and
Manchester public schools, graduating in 1938, and was a graduate of
the Bryant Stratton Business College in Boston. For several years
she was employed as a secretary for Lockwood & Gordon Theatre of
Boston. During these years she had the pleasure to meet many stage
entertainers. She was married in 1952 to the late Wilson MacCuish
who died the following year. Married in 1954 to the late Robert
Bruce, they made their home and raised their family on Apple
Street..
She
will be most remembered for her love of home and family. She also
enjoyed reading mysteries, working on crossword puzzles, playing the
piano and home gardening.
She
was a longtime member of the First Congregational Church in Essex.
She
is survived by two sons, Wallace W. Bruce and his wife Janice of
Essex and Robert A. Bruce and his wife Rachel of Lisbon, NH; two
daughters, Bonnie Wolfe, wife of the late Donald Wolfe, of Amesbury
and Norrie Stavros and her husband James of Essex; fourteen
grandchildren, Amy, Amanda, William, Robert, Wallace, James, Tyler,
Jessie, Daniel, Wallace, Zachary, John, Serena and Kylie and two
great grandchildren, Samuel and Mackenzie. She was the mother of the
late John M. Bruce formerly of Essex, Amy Bruce, wife of Robert D.
Bruce, formerly of Caratunk, ME and Martha Bruce formerly of Essex.
Her
funeral service will be held graveside 10 AM Saturday, Aug. 16, in
the Spring Street Cemetery, Essex. Family and friends are
respectfully welcomed. Arrangements are under the direction of the
Whittier-Porter Funeral Home of Ipswich.
